Gravitational waves from merging compact binaries

چکیده

Largely motivated by the development of highly sensitive gravitational-wave detectors, our understanding of merging compact binaries and the gravitational waves they generate has improved dramatically in recent years. Breakthroughs in numerical relativity now allow us to model the coalescence of two black holes with no approximations or simplifications. There has also been outstanding progress in our analytical understanding of binaries. We review these developments, examining merging binaries using black hole perturbation theory, post-Newtonian expansions, and direct numerical integration of the field equations. We summarize these approaches and what they have taught us about gravitational waves from compact binaries. We place these results in the context of gravitational-wave generating systems, analyzing the impact gravitational wave emission has on their sources, as well as what we can learn about them from direct gravitational-wave measurements.

Expected masses of merging compact object binaries observed in gravitational waves

We use the well tested StarTrack binary population synthesis code to examine the properties of the population of compact object binaries. We calculate the distribution of masses and mass ratios taking into account weights introduced by observability in gravitational waves during inspiral. We find that in the observability weighted distribution of double neutron star binaries there are two peaks...

Merging Rates of Compact Binaries in the Universe: Gravitational Waves and Gamma-ray Bursts

Merging rates of compact binaries (double neutron stars or black holes) are calculated based on the modern concept of binary stellar evolution. It is found that the initial laser interferometers with an rms-sensitivity of 10 at the frequency 100 Hz can detect 10–700 black holes and only ∼1 neutron star coalescences in a 1–year integration time. Implications of the evolutionary effects to the co...

Compact Binaries in Globular Clusters

In dense stellar systems the frequent dynamical interactions between stars play a crucial role in the formation and evolution of compact binaries. We study these processes using a novel approach combining a state-of-the-art binary population synthesis code with a simple treatment of dynamical interactions in dense star cluster cores. Here we focus on the dynamical and evolutionary processes lea...

Gravitational Lensing of Gravitational Waves from Merging Neutron Star Binaries.

We discuss the gravitational lensing of gravitational waves from merging neutron star binaries, in the context of advanced LIGO type gravitational wave detectors. We consider properties of the expected observational data with cut on the signal-to-noise ratio ρ, i.e., ρ > ρ0. An advanced LIGO should see unlensed inspiral events with a redshift distribution with cut-off at a redshift zmax < 1 for...

Constraining Population Synthesis Models via the Binary Neutron Star Population

The observed sample of double neutron-star (NS-NS) binaries presents a challenge to populationsynthesis models of compact object formation: the parameters entering into these models must be carefully chosen so as to match (i) the observed star formation rate and (ii) the formation rate of NS-NS binaries, which can be estimated from the observed sample and the selection effects related to the di...
